This ligament is located on the outside of the knee. The LCL function is to help control the sideways movement of the knee joint. Injury is usually by direct contact involving a force on the inside of the knee which pushes the knee outwards (away from the other knee)
Diagnosis
History & Clinical examination
An X-ray is usually required to exclude any boney injury
MRI scan may be required to confirm the diagnosis
Treatment
- Non-operative treatment includes physiotherapy and bracing
- Operative treatment involves reconstruction of the MCL
